چکیده

OBJECTIVES To investigate whether bicycling to school improves cardiometabolic risk factor profile and cardiorespiratory fitness among children. DESIGN Prospective, blinded, randomised controlled trial. SETTING Single centre study in Odense, Denmark PARTICIPANTS 43 children previously not bicycling to school were randomly allocated to control group (n=20) (ie, no change in lifestyle) or intervention group (ie, bicycling to school) (n=23). PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES Change in cardiometabolic risk factor score and change in cardiorespiratory fitness. RESULTS All participants measured at baseline returned at follow-up. Based upon intention-to-treat (ITT) analyses, clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors was lowered by 0.58 SD (95% CI -1.03 to -0.14, p=0.012) in the bicycling group compared to the control group. Cardiorespiratory fitness (l O(2)/min) per se did not increase significantly more in the intervention than in the control group (β=0.0337, 95% CI -0.06 to 0.12, p=0.458). CONCLUSIONS Bicycling to school counteracted a clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors and should thus be recognised as potential prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The intervention did, however, not elicit a larger increase in cardiorespiratory fitness in the intervention group as compared with the control group. Effectiveness of Co-Administration of Camelina Oil and Caloric Restriction on Cardiometabolic Risk Factors, Liver Function and Mental Health in Patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial Protocol

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease (CLD). Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants co-supplementation have been considered as an alternative treatment in NAFLD. This trial will evaluate camelina sativa oil (CSO) effects as a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants on cardiometabolic risk factors, metabolic endotoxemia, liver en...

The effect of Citrus Aurantifolia (Lemon) peels on cardiometabolic risk factors and markers of endothelial function in adolescents with excess weight: A triple-masked randomized controlled trial

Background: Childhood obesity is becoming a global problem and its incidence is increasing. The role of dietary intervention with fruits containing vitamin C and flavonoid to control obesity consequences in childhood has not been yet defined. Lemon (Citrus aurantifolia) peels contain flavonoid, pectin and vitamin C. We aimed to compare the effects of lemon peels and placebo on cardiometabolic r...

Provision of healthy school meals does not affect the metabolic syndrome score in 8-11-year-old children, but reduces cardiometabolic risk markers despite increasing waist circumference.

An increasing number of children are exhibiting features of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) including abdominal fatness, hypertension, adverse lipid profile and insulin resistance. Healthy eating practices during school hours may improve the cardiometabolic profile, but there is a lack of evidence. In the present study, the effect of provision of school meals rich in fish, vegetables and fibre on...
